Santorini is the Cyclades' southernmost island, situated between Ios and Anafi. The port of Piraeus is 128 nautical miles away, and Crete is 63 nautical miles away.
It has a
surface area of 76 square kilometers and a shoreline length of 69 kilometers.
The circumference is around 36 nautical miles.
Thera,
Therassia, Aspronisi, and the volcanoes (Palaia Kameni and Nea Kameni, where
the volcano's crater is located) make up the Santorini cluster of islands.
The
Caldera, the bay formed when the core part of ancient Strongyli collapsed to
the bottom, is surrounded by the three main islands, which form a
"ring" around it.
The large
crater created by a volcanic explosion approximately 1600 BC adds to the
island's peculiar atmosphere: settlements are built on the inner walls of the
crater, rather than on the sea level, as on other islands. Santorini is also
one of the few places on the planet where architectural complexes of
underground rock-hewn dwellings still exist within the volcanic soil.
The
caldera, as well as the entire cluster of Santorini islands, has been
designated as a natural wonderland. Thera is named after Theras of Sparta, a
legendary pioneer who arrived on the island about the 10th century B.C. and
founded the namesake town near Mesa Vouno.
Thera has
16 villages, Akrotiri, Vothonas, Vourvoulos, Gialos, Emporeio, Exo Gonia,
Karterados, Megalochori, Messaria, Imerovigli, Oia, Pyrgos, Fira, Firostefani,
Finikia and Therassia has 6 villages, Agrilia, Kera, Korfos, Manolas, Potamos and
Riva.
