The Interesting Story Of Porto Heli

Porto Heli, the ancient city of the Fishermen, was located across the present city, and its Acropolis was built on the top of the hill. The interesting thing about Porto Heli is that there are two "buried temples" dedicated to the god Apollo, which are buried in the mud, under the sea. The notorious Porto Heli is built on the ruins of the settlement of Fishermen, and was named by the old inhabitants of the place who were purple fishermen, as well as craftsmen in the processing of the homonymous dye. It is actually a gradual linguistic corruption of the name, in Halies and then in Heli, and later on it was given the nickname "Porto", due to its port.

The bay of Helios was not the same as it is today and the sea reached much deeper, which explains why part of the city, especially the two temples of Apollo, are now submerged under water and mud, at a small depth. The Porto Heli of this era is considered to be the "Riviera of the Peloponnese". It is a natural secluded bay, around 100km away from Nafplio, in the south of the prefecture of Argolis. It has a lot of beaches with clear, turquoise  waters, organized or free, which are located rather close to the port. The most famous is called Hinitsa and it has golden sand.porto heli greece hotels The beach Kounoupi has white pebbles while Costa is overlooking Spetses and Agios Emilianos, and stretches down the hill with the homonymous church and the beautiful surrounding landscape.
